Tomahawk East Wins in the 12th

6/29/18

Representatives from the Corn Belt and Tomahawk East teams converged in Milroy on Friday night as the Yankees hosted the 3rd annual All-Star Game between the two leagues.

The Corn Belt jumped out to a 3-0 lead with two runs in the third and one run in the fifth. The Tomahawk East's best early chance to get on the board came in the top of the fifth when they loaded the bases.

Finally in the top of the seventh, a lead-off error, followed by a base on balls got a pair on runners on the bases. Springfield's Branden Flock ripped a double to get the Tomahawk East on the board. Leavenworth's Jevan Richert came through with a clutch two-out, two-run single to tie the game at three a piece.

Richert's second inning on the mound saw the Corn Belt start with back-to-back hits. An intentional walk loaded the bases with no one out. Richert notched a strike out before coaxing a pop-up and a ground ball to get out of the inning with the score still tied.

The leagues exchanged zeros until the top of the twelfth when Essig's Ben Wolf drew a lead-off walk. A sacrifice bunt and a wild pitch moved him around to third. The Corn Belt's fifth error of the ballgame allowed Lamberton's Neil Eichten to reach base and Wolf to score the visitor's fourth run.

New Ulm's Wade French, who was already the pitcher of record, having thrown the bottom of the eleventh, retired the Corn Belt All-Stars in order to seal the 4-3 victory for the Tomahawk East League.

The MVP Award went to Leavenworth's Jevan Richert whose two RBI base hit tied the game. He also worked two scoreless innings on the mound, including wiggling out of the bases loaded, no out, jam in the bottom of the eighth. Richert also was the MVP of the 2016 All-Star Game in Bird Island. Wade French picked up the win on the mound, facing just six batters over two innings of work. Granite Falls Kilowatts pitcher Cam Vien took the tough loss, allowing one unearned run in his one inning. Sleepy Eye's Jared Beltz, who went 2-for-2 at the plate, was the only player in the ballgame with more than one hit.

With the win, the Tomahawk East League will host the Corn Belt in the 2019 All-Star Game. Thanks to Milroy for hosting a great celebration of amateur baseball! Best of luck to all the teams as they head down the homestretch of the regular season schedule! See you at the ballpark!
